Wow, I emailed you this story mere seconds after you posted this. Nice.

I remember when I only had to worry about losing my job to a fresh-faced college grad who would work for half my salary. Those were simpler times.

I can't wait to see how this is going to work. The results could be hilarious. (Or quite troublesome, depending on the outcome.)

I find the post (and the comments) xenophobic. You are suggesting that copy editing done in India will be of inferior quality (the phrases "bitch" and "the results could be hilarious"). Do you have any basis for this opinion? In particular, the how would you compare the quality of copy editing and layout of top US newspapers with top Indian newspapers like the
Hindu
( epaper )

This is so depressing. Where are the job sites for monastery honey and wooden yachts?

The indignant comment illustrates my point. "Welcome to the OC, bitch" is a line from an American television show, and it's more likely to be understood by people closer to the action than by people on the other side of the world (and if you don't understand it, I can see your being puzzled, but insulted?). That's the point. And there are better examples. What do people in Hyderabad know about Fullerton? Copy editing is not some technical function that can be done in a warehouse thousands of miles away. It's part of the journalism, an integral part, and it should be done alongside the reporters and senior editors. I would be making similar objections if the copy editing were being outsourced to New York or Miami or even Sacramento.

Furthermore, Indian English -- like British English, Canadian English and Australian English -- is not American English.

Bill, thanks for the clarification. Now I understand your concern better. I wish you had elaborated more in your original post; but then I would not have written the previous comment, which provided a perfect illustration of the point that you wanted to make :)

Truth be told, the OC Register very frequently has typos and other errors in the paper; it has a reputation among those of us in OC and sometimes the results are hilarious. [smile] I can probably spot at least 10 typos on any given day, just hitting random pages.
