I have nothing to add to your point here, but I would like to note that Obama busted out enormity again on Tuesday night. That was ballsy for an oration of such significance.
First, why couldn't this caption be tightened to "The Obama family is planning to move to Washington"?
Second, it's a pointless caption. Except, perhaps, for those citizens who may be wondering where the president and his family will be living come January.
I was pleased to see your twitter post: Please stop using "an" with "historic." It is one of my pet peeves, and it seems every half-baked news agency (aka cable news) insists on using the article "an". I was extremely surprised then to see an article on nytimes.com on election night about "An Historic Night." Quickly I grabbed my AP and NY Times style books, and double checked my style. By the time I turned back the page had reloaded and had already been removed.
I give people a little more leeway when they're talking, since many people use an extremely soft h and extremely under-stressed n, but I couldn't help but bite my lip while watching Sarah Palin on Larry King when she clearly emphasized ann hhistoric. Yarg!
Noneemac, your suggested caption is pithier but I don't think 'planning' would fit in place of 'making' in the first line, and if it did it would leave the second line short.
Silly caption writer. Words are for news.
I don't think any of the suggested changes make any sense, nor does the original one. If they are planning a move, shouldn't there be boxes and checklists and a van? It looks more like Obama is trying to kiss his wife and the kids are getting in the way.
